Provincial NDP leader Dominic Cardy says language duality is here to stay in spite of any online petition that calls for a referendum on bilingualism. Cardy says among all the provinces, New Brunswick is unique because of the makeup of the population.
Cardy says when times are hard, people look to blame others and then there have been odd recommendations from the Official Languages Commissioner on extending language rights beyond the requirements of the Official Languages Act.
Cardy also blames the provincial government, in part, pointing to the controversy over how the question of whether francophone and anglophone students should be using separate schol buses at a time when budgets are tight with cutbacks in education.
