Delays To Proposed Downtown Entertainment Centre

The long awaited Downtown Entertainment Centre in Moncton is getting closer to a reality after a presentation at Council.

The City Manager updated Council saying recent signs from the province are promising, but all the delays have pushed back the grand opening date of the centre.

Jacques Dube says the City must receive federal and provincial funding commitments by June 20th of this year at the latest so financial close can be done by September 30th.

He says, “The RFP required a substantial completion of the downtown centre by July of 2017. As a result of funding delays, substantial completion is now 2018, a year later than council contemplated when it issued the RFP early last year.”

Dube says he is completely confident Moncton’s business plan meets all 13 criteria recently set out by the province to receive funding.

He reinterated that this proposed centre will mean job creation for the province, stating that over 700 jobs will be created as a result of this project.

The Proposed centre will include an NHL sized rink, NBA court, that will also accommodate concerts and shows, and also a large meeting space.
