Land Donation To Help Protect Piping Plover

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has acquired a key piece of land along the Northumberland Strait in Kent County which will help protect the endangered species, the piping plover.

NCC spokesperson Andrew Holland says Joey Caissie donated the land in Richibucto-Village in memory of his late father.

During the summer months, this land is typical of areas where the piping plover like to nest.

“By all means, don’t light fires, don’t have your dog off a leash. Make sure you stay away from their nesting sites because they will only try to have chicks four times.”

Holland says recent surveys have shown there are only about 6,000 piping plovers left around the world.
