Help Your Pets Out In Winter Weather

Monctonians aren’t the only ones who are getting cabin fever.

Pets can go a little stir crazy as well according to Dr. Arsenault, the medical director at the Riverview Animal Hospital.

Arsenault says with bad weather limiting the time and distance of walks, the fitness level of your dog can suffer.

“We do see animals have a tendency to gain weight because they’re not as active, and they lose their fitness somewhat,” says Arsenault. “It’s important to take them out often I guess and certainly be aware of the elements as well, the cold and deep snow.”

Arsenault says after coming back from walks, you should wash your pet’s feet to ensure there’s no remaining road salt, or snow or ice causing them discomfort.

He says with consultations with your vet, you can tweak the diet of your pet and reduce the calories they are taking in, because they aren’t burning as much by exercising as regularly or as long in winter.
