Cause For Medical Waste Facility Fire Still Being Determined

There’s still no word on a cause for a fire at the Stericycle medical waste facility.

The fire in the Caledonia Industrial Park broke out Saturday night..and it took about 12 hours for firefighters to get the blaze out.

There was only one person in the building at the time, and no one was injured, but the building was extensively damaged.

Thankfully, the site of the fire was kilometres away from any residential areas….because of the plastics and metals inside, and the large plumes of smoke that filled the air..If it had been in an area surrounded by homes, the impact could have been much worse.

About 15 people are employed at the facility.

Stericycle is the area’s medical waste handlers for hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across the region. Officials are now trying to come up with a temporary disposal spot…and what they will do next.
