Unanimous Approval Of Commercial Development Rezoning Upsets Dieppe Residents

Dieppe City Council approved the rezoning of a controversial 58-thousand square foot grocery store, gas station, car wash and strip mall, and local residents are unhappy.

The land to be rezoned is bounded by Dieppe Boulevard, Yvonne Street and Valmont Crescent, and it’s currently designated residential only.

Residents expressed concerns about increased traffic, light and noise pollution, and streets more dangerous to playing children.

The City made the residents and developers meet to work out a compromise, and the rezoning now has eight conditions attached to it.

Those include a traffic impact and noise study, as well as measures taken to reduce the impact on nearby neighbours.

Dieppe Mayor Yvon Lapierre said they had to balance the needs of the municipality and the needs of the neighbourhood.
