Help A Firefighter – Shovel Out A Fire Hydrant

When a home is on fire — there’s not extra time for snow removal.

St. Stephen Fire Chief Jeff Richardson says they send crews out after every storm, but it usually takes two to three days to clean every fire hydrant.

Richardson says if you have a fire hydrant on your property, it would be a great help to do some extra shoveling and make sure it is clear of ice and snow. This wa firefighters can concentrate on putting out the fire, and not on digging out the hydrant.

Richardson also reminding residents and business owners, you need two exits from every building incase of a fire, so don’t forget to shovel out an extra path. “Building owners, especially public buildings, exits have to be kept clean. If you have a sprinkler system, we (firefighters) have to be able to access the pumper connection on the buildings.”
