Bone Marrow Match Found For Moncton Boy

There’s great news for a Moncton boy who is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Four year old Damon Shea-Caissie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with he was almost 2 years old, and is set to undergo a bone marrow transplant.

The search was ongoing over the past few months to find a match, but his mom Elizabeth says the good news is, doctors believe they have found one. There’s there’s still a long road ahead yet.

First, the donor will have to go through extensive testing before a transplant can be done.

Damon is currently undergoing chemotherapy at the IWK in Halifax in advance of a transplant. His mom says, “He has to do some additional therapy, it’s called conditioning. Doctors will use some very intense chemotherapy, and sometimes add some radiation to it, to prepare his body for the bone marrow transplant.”

They are hoping to travel to the children’s hospital in Toronto in March.
