Record Shattering “Green Christmas” For Metro Moncton This Year

We might have been dreaming of a White Christmas but we got a green one instead and it broke temperature records!

Environment Canada meteorologist Max Desharnais says we were under the influence of a low pressure system coming from the Gulf of Mexico and those systems are always accompanied by really mild temperatures and lots of moisture.

He says this gave us our Green Christmas.

“This translated into a record breaking high temperature of 15.6 degrees – that beat the old record by 2 degrees,” says Deharnais. “The old one was 13.3 degrees and that was recorded in ’96 at the airport.”

Bouctouche was the hot spot, hitting 16.2 degrees on Christmas Day, which beats out the old record high of 8.7 degrees set in 2008.

Desharnais says we only got 17 mm of rain, which was low compared to other areas in the province which saw upwards of 50 mm.

He says we should expect a few more days of above average temperatures before more normal winter conditions set in Sunday night.
