Atlantic Lotto Suggests Scratch Tickets Unsuitable For Teenagers

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation says scratch tickets are not suitable as gifts for teenagers.

While ALC is thrilled scratchers are a popular stocking stuffer, they are concerned about the effect on teenagers after research suggests exposure to gambing at an early age can lead to problems down the road.

Spokesperson Kim Wilson says parents or family members should not buy tickets for minors.

“When we talk about adults and gambling, we talk about responsible gambling and playing for fun,” says Wilson. “But the conversation really shifts with youth to say there’s risk for them and we want to make sure we educate parents that these are not ideal gifts.”

She stresses there are very good reasons for age restrictions on the sale of gambling items.

“We take that commitment to responsible gambling very seriously and that’s why we want to take the time to educate parents,” says Wilson. “Yes there are risks to use gambling and we don’t want them purchasing products for those that are under the age of 19.”

Wilson suggests items like concert or movies tickets instead.
