Firefighters warning you to take preventative measures to keep your Christmas tree from going up in flames this holiday season.
Platoon Chief Mike Boyle of the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department tells us while Christmas tree fires are uncommon they’re usually very serious when they do happen.
Boyle says according to the National Fire Protection Association, one of every three Christmas tree fires in homes are caused by an electrical problem like holiday lighting.
He says if you’re getting a real tree inspect it for freshness before you buy making sure it has a high moisture content. When you get it home, take a few inches off the base, put it into a stand that can hold around three litres of water and keep it well watered.
If you buy an artificial tree, make sure it’s labelled and certified fire retardant by the manufacturer.
