Poverty Group Feels Left In The Cold

Extreme disappointment is coming from the Common Front for Social Justice following today’s speech from the throne.

The poverty group’s provincial coordinator Jean-Claude Basque says the Gallant government has ignored the poor.

“Poverty is nowhere in the speech. So it seems it is not a priority. We know at least 88,000 people are living in poverty in New Brunswick and half of them are people on social assistance.”

On the positive side, Basque says his group is pleased about an upcoming increase in the minimum wage and the government’s promise to review its impending drug plan noting how current premiums and co-payments are too high for the poor.

He only hopes the Gallant government has more to say about poverty in the next provincial budget.
