Protest March Being Held In Shediac Over Mega-Campground

A large crowd is expected to converge on Shediac Town Hall tonight to oppose a controversial mega-campground being planned in the community.

More than 2,200 people have signed a petition opposing the 700 site campground which could be built between Pointe du Chene Road and Parlee Beach Road.

Marie-Paul Martin, owner Beausejour Camping, says a protest march will begin at 5pm at Home Hardware and will continue to Shediac Town Hall prior to the meeting at 6pm.

Martin says it’s difficult to say how big the turn out will be since many people are afraid to speak out against their elected representatives.

The mega-campground is being proposed by Michel Boudreau and formerly by Shediac-Cap Pele MLA and now Health Minister Victor Boudreau who has stepped away from the project after consulting with the province’s conflict of interest commissioner.

Many in the community opposed to the project say the land is an important green space, it will lead to oversaturation of the campground market and also lead to further overcrowding in the summer.
