Moncton’s former downtown shopping jewel is slowing starting to come down.
Work to tear down Highfield Square has been taking place for weeks on the inside but we’re now getting a glimpse of the building coming down on the outside.
Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc tells 919 News that it’s a bit sad for him since he once worked at the mall’s twin cinemas.
“It’s kind of a bittersweet moment. Highfield Square was always a symbol of the vibrancy of downtown Moncton, or progress and success.”
Leblanc adds the city has a great opportunity to restore the site to its former glory with a proposed downtown entertainment centre.
The Mayor seems confident shovels could be in the ground next year.
