UPDATE: More Information Emerging About Shooter In Attack On Parliament

The lockdown in Ottawa lasted well into the night and ended after authorities determined there had just been one shooter in yesterday’s attack on Parliament.

He has been identified as 32 year old Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau, a convert to Islam, who changed his name from Micheal Joseph Hall.

He had a privileged upbringing in Laval, outside Montreal, was privately educated but had a criminal record dating back to 2001 for drugs as well as a robbery in 2003, assault causing bodily harm and a weapons charge. Zehaf-Bibeau underwent a psychiatric assessment before being convicted of another robbery in Vancouver three years ago. His passport had been seized because he was considered a high risk traveller.

His mother is listed as the Deputy Chairperson in the Immigration Division with the Immigrant and Refugee Board. She started out in 1990 as a refugee protection officer. His father is described as a Libyan businessman who may have fought in that country in 2011 at the time of the revolution there.
