Conservation Council Says Tighter Aquaculture Regulations Are Needed

Proposed regulations for the aquaculture industry do not deliver on the responsibilities of Department of Fisheries and Oceans to protect wild fish and fish habitat from the negative impacts of aquaculture, according to Friends of the Earth Canada and the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

The Conservation Council’s Science Advisor Inka Milewski maintain it’s a misconception to think aquaculture is more beneficial to the economy than the wild fishery which generates six times as many jobs.

Milewski says not enough is being done to control the vast amount of waste that’s produced by fish farms. She estimates a farm with 300 thousand fish is generating 110 metric tons of waste and it’s no coincidence the number of wild fish go down in the vicinity of fish farms.
