Survey Finds Expensive Milk In NB

The results of a survey examining milk prices across the country found a wide disparity of prices according to the consulting firm Field Agent Canada.

Milk prices tend to be highest in Atlantic Canada with a recent 4 litre container of milk in the Toronto area virtually the same price of a 2 litre container in St. John’s, Newfoundland – double the cost.

Spokesperson Jeff Doucette says the size of the local market will often dictate prices with large cities with more than a million people being able to charge less than a small area like New Brunswick.

Doucette says one of the major reasons behind the wide range in cost is that each province has legislation in place protecting its own dairy industry which is why milk products rarely flow across provincial borders.
