MADD Hopes For New Legislation With Newly Elected Provincial Government

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Continues to look for improved laws and punishments for drunk drivers across the country.

They’ll continue to work with this new provincial government and the RCMP in and effort to crackdown on the problem.

Spokesperson for MADD in the Atlantic region Susan MacAskill says they would like to see new legislation implemented by both the provincial and federal governments.

“I would like to see them consider having drug impaired legislation. Right now, police can only lay drug impaired charges under the criminal code, so provinces need to start introducing legislation that allows police can lay a drug impaired charge under the provincial motor vehicle act.”

MacAskill would also like to see the graduated licensing system improved, and a mandatory ignition interlock system in New Brunswick

Statistics show, on average, four people die every day in Canada, at the hands of a drunk driver, and around 175 people are injured. That makes it the number one criminal cause of death in our country.
