Provincial Liberal leader Brian Gallant believes his stand on shale gas development is more in line with what most people in the province want because they’re worried over the effects on water and their health.
The moratorium on shale gas exploration is being greeted with skepticism by some of the shale gas protestors this weekend in Rexton who say it’s just a matter of time before the Liberals move ahead with fracking should they win the provincial election.
The People’s Alliance Party wants a provincewide referendum while the Green Party wants an outright ban, arguing you will create more jobs with green initiatives and points to Massachusetts as an example where there is no fracking, compared to western Pennsylvania where there is.
Gallant also warns Conservative leader David Alward is putting all his eggs in one economic basket with shale gas when it’s not known if there is enough of a supply in the province to be commercially viable while the Liberals have a more diversified approach to creating jobs and getting the provincial economy moving again.
