Provincial NDP leader Dominic Cardy is promising to introduce a strong pay equity law if he becomes premier on September 22.
Cardy says, within four years, he would introduce legislation that would compel companies with ten or more employees to pay a woman equally for work of equal value to a man’s work.
The Liberals have also promised to enact similar legislation, but Cardy says their plan is too weak.
“The Liberals have come out and said, for organizations larger than 50 employees, they’ll impose a private sector pay equity settlement. That means absolutely nothing. There are hardly any businesses that would qualify under that plan.”
Cardy also used an appearance in Metro Moncton on Tuesday afternoon to make a pitch for converting nearly half of NB Liquor’s future profits to an income trust that the party says would be used to pay down the province’s debt.
