Suicide Rate In New Brunswick Declining

This is World Suicide Prevention Day which was created to end the silence, encourage discussion and ultimately help prevent deaths from suicide.

This year’s theme is Suicide Prevention Across the Globe emphasizing that suicide is a global problem that can, and does, affect anyone, anywhere.

Suicidologist Dr. Greg Zed of the Horizon Health Network says the more people who are trained to look out for those people who might be susceptible to committing suicide, the better.

In Canada, someone commits suicide every 142 minutes. Dr. Zed says the rate in New Brunswick appears to be going down and is hoping we’re turning the page on a time when people felt uncomfortable about talking about mental health issues like depression but there are still too many people who remain silent and, as a result, feel isolated and hopeless.
