Resident says changes to winter parking ban are needed

A Moncton resident says he has a plan to change the city’s winter parking ban.

Yves Bourgeois is proposing the Hub City follow the lead of places like Halifax where the parking ban is only on in situations where excessive snow is anticipated or already falling.

Bourgeois estimates the current blanket parking ban is really only needed for about 17 days all winter.

He says the city could create a “blast” system that notifies residents via e-mail, text message, the city’s website or by telephone whether or not they can park on the street overnight.

“The technology is available now, so we can actually reach out to citizens and say for that 15 to 17 days of the year when you can’t park on the street, you need to bring in the car.”

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc says they’ll take Bourgeois’ idea into consideration and will bring it up with the city’s Engineering Department and Snow Removal Committee in the future.
