Donald William Gillis

January 23, 1955  –  September 9, 2026

With broken hearts, the family of Donald William Gillis, announce his passing on September 9, surrounded by his loving family. Born in 1955 to William and Patricia Gillis, Don was the second child of a family that grew to seven children. Throughout his life, Don took his role as big brother very seriously, mentoring and watching over not only his siblings but also his extended family of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many others.

Don had many tales from his early years at Harrisville School, laying the foundation for a life full of adventure. Following graduation from Moncton High School, Don attended NBIT, where he began his lifelong passion for metalworking, developing his many skills in welding, blacksmithing, hydraulics, machining and mechanical repairs of all kinds. Whenever a new certification was required, it was simply a new challenge for Don to execute. Following his early years as a blacksmith at the CN shops, Don was a proud leader at Carter Brothers Ltd. for over 20 years. He succeeded at all levels and mentored countless others who dared to be his apprentice – including the succeeding generations of Gillis family members with the stamina to endure. With certainty, you knew if Don was your friend.

Throughout his adult life Don shared his passion for all things mechanical, whether it be his work or the hobbies in his shop where he fabricated anything and everything. This included phases of old truck restorations; tractors; equipment; muscle cars; race cars and even junior dragsters for the young lads. Don was well known for his ability to get the most from the least.

In 1979, Don met the love of his life, Kathy, and together they created a wonderful life and family, who Don loved fiercely. Many family celebrations were hosted by Don and Kathy at their welcoming Gorge Road home where countless stories began and continue to be told. A number of extended family members also called their Gorge Road residence “home” for various durations and reasons. The road between Moncton and Miramichi always went through the Gorge. Kathy and Don are extremely proud of their three children, Audrey, Laura and William, and this pride also extends to their five grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and their children.

For the past twelve years, on any given Saturday, Don, his brother Mike, and grandson James could be found tackling the next project. He would never miss an opportunity pass on his vast knowledge.

Don is survived by his beloved wife Kathy (Saunders); cherished children, daughters Audrey Cochrane (Matt), Laura Frost ( Brady), and son William Gillis (Hoa Vo); grandchildren Molly, James, Mary, Ruby and Jack; sisters Diane Prosser (Eric), Kathie Blomsma (Paul), Patti Trites (Stevie) and brothers Danny (Timmie), Mike (Janet), and Peter (Trina); as well as many other much-loved nieces, nephews, and extended Gillis and Saunders family members.

Don was predeceased by his father William (2016), and his mother Patricia (2021).

The Gillis family extends their sincere gratitude to The Moncton Hospital Cardiac Care Unit, with special thanks to Angie Gallant, RN, at the Heart Function Clinic.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton, NB.
