It’s Hip Hop Day

Today is Hip Hop Day, going back to August 11, 1973, when DJ Kool Herc threw a back-to-school party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the South Bronx, that evening is now widely credited to the birth of the hip hop. Now considered one of the most commercially successful music genres, it never reached a global audience until September 16,1979 when The Sugarhill Gang released the single “Rapper’s Delight” which brought the underground hip hop music of the Bronx in New York to the world. Another of the most influential hip hop tracks came in July of 1982 when Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 released “The Message” and the rest is history. If you are a hip hop fan and a fan of music, these are two of the biggest defining moments of the hip hop and rap genres.
