Stay Safe in the Heat

With extreme heat in the forecast, the Town of Riverview is reminding residents to take precautions to stay safe and cool.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself and others:

💧 Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

🏠 Stay Cool – Spend time in air-conditioned spaces. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, consider visiting public places like libraries, community centres, or malls.

👶 Check on Vulnerable Neighbours – Older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions are at greater risk. Give them a call or drop by with a cool treat to check in.

🌳 Limit Outdoor Activity – Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.

🐶 Don’t Forget Pets – Make sure your pets have shade and fresh water. Limit outdoor activity to short periods in the mornings or evenings. Never leave them (or anyone) in a parked car.

😎 Practice Sun Safety – Cover exposed skin, wear a hat and use sun block (SPF 30 or greater) and re-apply every hour.

🌀 Know the Signs of Heat Illness – Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, headache, and confusion. Seek medical help if you or someone else shows signs of heatstroke.
