Horizon Health Network says a year-old command centre at The Moncton Hospital (TMH) is helping patients receive more timely care by improving how staff coordinate bed use and patient movement.
Horizon said the dedicated space brings key teams together to monitor capacity and make decisions in real time.
The center opened in April 2025 and consolidates nearly two dozen staff members into a single location.
This team includes patient flow navigators, discharge planners, nursing supervisors, administrative support, a bed access coordinator, a bed board clerk, and liaisons from the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program.
Horizon explained that the setup replaces a system that relied heavily on emails, phone calls and scattered meetings.
“The patient flow command centre allows staff from across the hospital to collaborate effectively and orchestrate patient movement throughout the facility,” Christine Richards, Patient Flow Manager at The Moncton Hospital, said.
She added that having teams in one place helps remove barriers and ensures patients receive the right care at the right time.
Julie Weir, Clinical Director of Horizon’s Operations, Patient Flow, and Ambulatory Care Program, said the centre has increased face‑to‑face communication among staff who previously had limited opportunities to work together.
“Everyone is focused in the same area, so there is much more face‑to‑face communication,” Weir said.
Horizon says the initiative has strengthened collaboration and morale among staff involved in patient flow and discharge planning.
The Moncton Hospital’s command centre is one of three now operating within the network, following earlier launches at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton and, more recently, at the Miramichi Regional Hospital.
Greg Doiron, Horizon’s Vice President of Clinical Operations, said the model helps the network make better use of inpatient beds and supports timely movement through hospitals.
He noted that improved flow directly affects access to surgeries and wait times in emergency departments.
Horizon says the work supports its 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, which includes commitments to improving access to care and ensuring patients receive appropriate treatment through more efficient use of hospital resources.
