The East Coast has so many treasures including its deep history, vibrant stories and delicious sea food and spices! Over the years, a culture was created that is understood across the East Coast- from the way we give directions to the love we have for Donair. There is a long list of items that is a tell-tale sign that someone is from the East Coast, whether that be New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, or PEI. So- Tell me you’re from the East Coast, without telling me you’re from the East Coast…
First thing is first, “Oh Yeah… Yeah… Yeah.” while holding your breath, as a complete response in conversation, or ending a conversation. As an “outsider” to Moncton, and the East Coast in general, the first time I was hit with the “Oh Yeah… Yeah… Yeah…” In conversation I was confused and slightly concerned for the lady at the market stand. I have come to learn this is just normal!
Next, directions- there’s two things here:
- Giving directions with landmarks, and sometimes landmarks that no longer exist. Heck, sometimes I’ve gotten directions with landmarks that haven’t been around for decades! When you’re looking for a pink bridge in Moncton, that hasn’t been pink since the 80’s… It makes the directions just a little difficult.
- Giving directions with the length of the time it takes to get to your destination. Pauline, proud Monctonian, says “We measure distances in time. Miramichi is an hour and a half away from Moncton.”
Back to conversation, when someone says “rate good” instead of right good, you just know and; when someone hits you with the Newfoundland special of “yes by.” If you couldn’t figure out someone is proudly an East Coaster from any of the above, the delicious amounts of Summer Savoury on anything will give it away!! You might even discover a new recipe over a cup of tea on the porch!
