Canada’s Premiers will meet in PEI this week.
The 13 provincial and territorial Premiers will meet from July 21 to 23 in Charlottetown.
This is the annual summer meeting of the Council of the Federation.
Some of the issues to be discussed include health, national security, Canada-U.S. relations, international and internal trade, economic growth, and public safety.
The agenda will also include discussions with leaders of national Indigenous organizations, working sessions among premiers, and a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
PEI Premier Rob Lantz will host the end, and Carney will join the leaders on July 23.
New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt has a list of items she will be advocating for. They include:
- Growing Canada’s clean electricity supply by building on New Brunswick’s leadership in nuclear energy, including opportunities at Point Lepreau and preparations for a second nuclear power site.
- Strengthening electricity interties to build a more connected, reliable and resilient Canadian grid.
- Positioning New Brunswick as Canada’s Maritime energy hub by strengthening electricity infrastructure and improving connections to domestic and international markets.
- Advancing nation-building projects that support long-term economic growth and Canada’s energy security, including strategic investments in assets such as the Mactaquac and Belledune generating stations.
- Growing opportunities in the defence, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing sectors while supporting Canada’s evolving security needs.
- Removing barriers to economic growth and strengthening internal trade across Canada.
“Canada needs more power, and New Brunswick is ready to help deliver it,” Holt said. “We are home to Canada’s first nuclear generating station, we’re preparing for the next generation of nuclear energy, and we’re strengthening the electricity connections that will help move reliable, affordable power where Canadians need it most. New Brunswick has the expertise, infrastructure and ambition to help power Canada’s future.”
