Horizon Health: Meet Dr. Halpine

Life after stroke looks different for everyone.

Depending on its severity, a stroke can lead to a range of physical and cognitive challenges that affect mobility, communication, thinking, and more. Rehabilitation plays an important role in recovery.

At Horizon’s The Moncton Hospital, Dr. Halpine assesses and treats stroke patients in their recovery journey. Her goal, as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, is to help patients return to the highest level of function and independence possible and to improve their overall quality of life – physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially.

“The goal of rehabilitation is to empower people to regain quality of life after experiencing loss of function following a stroke or other injury,” said Dr. Halpine.

Dr. Halpine works alongside a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physiotherapists and others. Together, they treat inpatients – with the goal of enabling safe discharge home with any necessary equipment and supports— and outpatients, who can safely live at home while recovering from their stroke.

The team offers multifaceted rehabilitation, which includes family and community supports to optimize a patient’s adjustment to their post-stroke needs and to their reintegration into outpatient life.

This Stroke Awareness Month let’s celebrate all the health care workers providing stroke care. Thank you for all you do!
