There are many charitable organizations in Moncton and the surrounding area. You’ve probably heard some of their names, but may not know exactly what they do. Each week, we’ll highlight a different organization, sharing who they are and the work they do. We’ll also let you know about any upcoming events where you can learn more or get involved.
This week’s Charitable Organization of the Week is The Humanity Project.
The Humanity Project is a Moncton-based non-profit founded by Charlie Burrell that provides critical support, meals, and addiction recovery services to individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Mission
To a degree all of us are ‘wounded’ in one way or another, and not every wound is self-inflicted.
In recognition of this fact, our volunteers, staff, and supporters seek to feed, house, and clothe the homeless through compassionate acts that encourage each person to hope and strive for a better tomorrow.
Urban Community Centre (Moncton)
Their city headquarters is located at 449 St. George St., operating as a one-stop-shop drop-in center that provides vital resources to the working poor and those unhoused.
- Meal Services: Serves weekday suppers and weekend lunches. Weekday supper is served at 4:30 PM, and weekend lunch is served at 11:30 AM
- Basic Needs: Distributes free emergency food boxes, clothing, footwear, and toiletries.
- Education & Support: Offers tutoring, GED prep, resume building, and job search assistance

The Humanity Farm & Recovery Centre
Their flagship initiative is a sprawling 187-acre rural recovery centre located about 40 km outside Moncton in Little River (near Salisbury).
The farm, also known as the JOSH Project, or Just Organizations Serving Humanity, focuses on people who are not being served by existing shelters and services in Moncton. It operates as a full rehabilitation centre, where individuals are housed in single-unit tiny houses and offered mental health and addiction recovery services on-site. This provides a peaceful rural setting for men and women and includes counseling and opioid replacement therapy.
Each of the tiny house units is a 8′ x 10’bunkhouse, with a bed, desk, a closet, mini fridge, air conditioning and heat. They will serve as temporary housing, until people living there are able to move on to more permanent options.
In addition, the main farmhouse serves as a communal space for meals, laundry, and socializing.
