National environmental award for Town of Salisbury fire station

A national recognition for the Salisbury Fire Station.

The municipality received the 2026 Environmental Leadership & Sustainability Award from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators for the fire station’s net-zero qualities.

The award was given in the under 20,000 Population Category.

Town CAO Austin Henderson was on hand in Whistler, British Columbia, for the awards presentation this week.

The fire station was built in 2025, is around 15,000 square feet and addresses the town’s fire and rescue needs while reducing the environmental impact. It replaced the outdated station from the 1970’s.

“This Facility ensures that our Town, our volunteer members, and our residents are served by space, equipment, and gear that reflects the needs of a modern firefighting service, even in a rural community that is dependent on volunteers,” said Robert Campbell, Mayor of the Town of Salisbury. “The Salisbury Fire Rescue Station shows that these critical municipal operations can be advanced while also meeting ambitious environmental targets, beautifying the Town’s Main Street, and showcasing both environmental and financial sustainability.”

The Station utilizes renewable energy, collects and stores water for fire suppression, providing 10 times more on-site water than at the current building and specific construction methods, including ICF and a geothermal system, to reduce energy consumption by over 40 percent compared to standard building construction, reducing energy costs by 56 percent.

A ground-mounted solar array is being installed in Spring 2026, and it is expected to power nearly 80 per cent of the building.
