Summer Safety with Kids

As summer approaches, kids are spending more time outside enjoying playgrounds, camps, sports, and family adventures. At BGC Riverview, we know that outdoor play is an important part of childhood. Whether children are participating in summer camp activities, exploring nature, or simply playing with friends, staying active outdoors helps build confidence, friendships, and healthy habits. But along with all that sunshine comes an important reminder,  sun safety matters.

Children’s skin is especially sensitive to harmful UV rays. According to Health Canada, even a single severe sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of skin damage later in life. That’s why teaching kids healthy sun habits early is so important.

One of the easiest ways to protect children is by making sunscreen part of the daily routine. Experts recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapplying it every two hours, especially after swimming or heavy activity. It’s also important to remember easy-to-miss areas like ears, shoulders, the tops of feet, and the back of the neck.

Clothing can also make a big difference. Lightweight long sleeves, hats with brims, and UV-protective sunglasses help shield children from the strongest rays of the day. At BGC Riverview, staff encourage children to take water breaks, wear hats during outdoor programming, and seek shade whenever possible.

Parents should also keep an eye on the daily UV Index. In Canada, UV exposure is often strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., even on cloudy days. Planning outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can help reduce exposure while still allowing kids to enjoy the outdoors.

Let’s not forget about hydration! Kids can become dehydrated quickly when running and playing in hot weather. Encourage children to drink water regularly before they feel thirsty and take cooling breaks throughout the day.

At BGC Riverview, we believe summer should be filled with fun, friendships, discovery, and safe outdoor adventures. By teaching children simple sun safety habits now, families can help ensure kids enjoy healthy summers for years to come. Whether it’s applying sunscreen before camp, packing a water bottle, or wearing a favourite sun hat, small steps can make a big difference.
