Emily Hay

October 8, 1929  –  April 29, 2026

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Emily at the age of 96, wife of the late John Hay. She was the daughter of the late Theophile Poirier of Shediac Bridge and Olive Arsenault of New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Emily is survived by her 7 daughters and 1 son: Brenda (late Bill Wiseman) of Moncton; Barbara (Greg Parrish) of Salmon Arm, BC; Judy of Halifax; Peggy (Bill Trought) of Toronto; Cathy (Mike Oosterhoff) of Salmon Arm, BC; Debbie (Ralph Richard) of Moncton; Coco (Louis Fournier) of Dartmouth; and Gara (Kelley Phillips) of Aurora, Ont. Emily is survived by her sisters Jeannine Whiting and Marie-Therese Poirier as well as her brothers, Charlie, Clarence, and Bobbie. Emily was predeceased by her sisters Geneva McKay and Margaret Briffet, as well as her brothers Rudolf, Paul, Louis, and Vincent. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Melissa Trought.

Emily was the proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 5, soon to be 6, great-grandchildren.

Our mother was a homemaker until all of her children were in school. She then worked for School District 15 as a Library Assistant. She loved “playing with her house”, as she described it, and was happiest with her family around her. She spent many hours knitting, quilting, and cross stitching. She loved playing cards with her family and friends. Emily was an avid Blue Jays fan from the beginning of the franchise. She taught religion classes in her home for years and was an active member of the St. Augustin’s Catholic Women’s League. Emily and John enjoyed summers at Parlee Beach and bowling in the CN league on Wednesday nights. The Press Club was their favourite after-bowling relaxation.

Emily had an infectious sense of humour and she loved a good story. She kept her favourite jokes on cue cards in her purse, always ready when the opportunity arose to tell a joke. If life was measured by laughter, Emily would have won an Olympic medal.

Our family extends sincere appreciation to the staff of Residence Moncton Residence for the wonderful care our mother received during her years there.
