Failed traffic stop leads to incident involving aggressive dog

RCMP are investigating after an incident involving a driver who didn’t stop for police and an altercation involving a dog.

A member of the Sussex RCMP was doing traffic enforcement on Highway 1 in the early morning of May 3 and saw a vehicle speeding.

The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but it fled.

A short time later, the officer found the vehicle parked behind a business on Route 124 in Norton.

According to the RCMP, when the officer approached the vehicle a passenger began moving around after noticing the officer, and a dog could be heard inside the vehicle.

The driver returned and was asked for ID and told to not open the vehicle doors.

The driver opened a door anyway and a large dog got out of the vehicle, barking and acting aggressively toward the officer.

The driver, also the owner of the dog, didn’t try to control the dog as it moved toward the officer.

While the officer tried to keep some distance from the dog, it continued to act aggressively and get closer.

The RCMP said the officer feared for his safety and fired a single shot to try to stop the threat.

The dog was hit and died at the scene.

Another officer arrived but the driver of the vehicle abruptly left the area.

The Serious Incident Response Team was consulted and has reviewed the file. They found the incident doesn’t meet their mandate to investigate.

The RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
