The Power of Play: Why Getting Outside Matters More Than Ever for Kids

There’s something simple—and powerful—about a child playing outside.

In a world filled with screens, schedules, and structured activities, time spent outdoors has never been more important. Fresh air, open space, and unstructured play give children something they can’t get anywhere else: the freedom to explore, imagine, and connect—with nature and with themselves.

At BGC Riverview, we see the impact of outdoor play every single day.

Through our participation in Rewild Your Child, a program dedicated to encouraging children to spend meaningful time outside, we are helping young people rediscover the joy of nature. Whether it’s exploring local green spaces, building forts, observing wildlife, or simply running and playing, these experiences are shaping healthier, happier kids.

The benefits go far beyond physical activity.

Time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus, and boost creativity. Children who regularly play outside develop stronger problem-solving skills and greater resilience. They learn to take safe risks, work together, and build confidence in their abilities. Nature becomes both a classroom and a playground.

For many of the children we serve, access to safe, engaging outdoor experiences isn’t always guaranteed. That’s why programs like Rewild Your Child are so important. We are intentional about creating opportunities for kids to unplug, step outside, and engage with the world around them.

And the results are clear.

We see children who are more energized, more engaged, and more connected—to each other and to their environment. We see curiosity spark as they discover something new, and pride grow as they navigate challenges in the natural world.

Most importantly, we see joy.

At BGC Riverview, we believe every child deserves the chance to experience the wonder of the outdoors. By making outdoor play a daily priority, we’re not just giving kids a break from screens—we’re helping them build lifelong habits that support their well-being.

Because sometimes, the best thing a child can do… is simply go outside and play.
