Learning the voting process with BGC Kids!

Teaching kids about the voting process might not seem urgent in a world full of busy schedules, homework, and extracurriculars—but it’s one of the most powerful ways we can prepare them to become engaged, informed citizens.

At its core, voting is about having a voice. When young people understand that their opinions matter and that they have the ability to influence their communities, it builds confidence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. These are lessons that go far beyond politics—they shape how kids see themselves in the world.

The challenge, of course, is making something like voting feel relevant and exciting to children and youth. That’s where creativity comes in.

At BGC Clubs in the Greater Moncton Area, we believe learning should be hands-on, engaging, and—most importantly—fun. That’s why many of our Clubs introduce the concept of voting through interactive, pretend polls that bring the process to life. Instead of simply talking about elections, we recreate them in a way that kids can experience firsthand.

From setting up ballot boxes to creating campaign posters, youth get to explore every step of the process. They might vote on something relatable like their favorite snack, the next group activity, or even a fun “Club president” election. Along the way, they learn about fairness, decision-making, and the importance of respecting different opinions.

These activities spark meaningful conversations. Why is voting important? What does it mean to make an informed choice? How do we listen to others, even when we disagree? By introducing these ideas early, we help young people build critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how communities work.

Even more importantly, we’re helping to remove the mystery around voting. When kids grow up seeing it as something approachable and empowering—not confusing or intimidating—they’re more likely to participate when they’re older.

Creating these early experiences also strengthens a sense of community within our Clubs. Kids see that their voices matter in shaping their environment, whether it’s choosing a game or planning an event. That feeling of being heard is something they carry with them.

In a time when civic engagement is more important than ever, teaching kids about the voting process isn’t just a lesson—it’s an investment in the future. Through simple, interactive experiences like pretend polls, we’re planting the seeds for a generation that feels confident using their voice and understands the value of participating in their community.

And it all starts with something as simple—and powerful—as casting a vote.
