Léonard Gionet

1933 ~ 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Léonard Gionet, aged 92, of Maison Providence in Shediac, on March 7, 2026. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Born in Caraquet on June 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Edmond and Léontine Gionet.

Before his retirement, Léonard worked for the Correctional Service of Canada for 25 years as a correctional officer and carpentry instructor. He will be remembered as a father who loved bringing his family and friends together. He had many passions, including rebuilding accident-damaged cars in his garage, snowmobiling, swimming in the pool, and dancing the “jive.” He loved teasing, telling stories, and was always ready to help others.

He leaves to mourn seven children: Roger Gionet of Toronto; Claudette Gionet of Dieppe; Denise Swan (Robin) of Dieppe; Nicole Gionet (Charlie) of Quispamsis; Gisèle Gionet (Marcel) of Shippagan; Rachel Gionet of Dieppe; and Paul Gionet (Nadine) of Dieppe; his grandchildren (Jérémie, Sophie, Jacob, Justin, Josée, Marco, and Rémi); as well as five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Amélia, Jeanne (André), Roméo (Madelaine), Jean (Irène), and Léon (Georgette); as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (Gautreau) Gionet, in 2011.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his four brothers: Réginald, Alcide, Edmond, and Donat, and by two sisters: Irène and Tina.

We would like to thank all the staff of Foyer Oasis in St-Anselme, as well as Maison Providence in Shediac for the good care they provided to our father.
