Moncton creates new leadership public safety role

The City of Moncton has its first director of by-law enforcement and community safety.

Charles Leblanc has been named to serve in the role.

LeBlanc has worked at the City of Moncton since 2006, first serving as a firefighter and most recently as deputy chief of the Moncton Fire Department. He has a background in both law enforcement and firefighting.

“His leadership, operational knowledge, and commitment to community service are exemplary,” says Jeff Preston, general manager of Protective Services. “His on‑the‑ground experience and ability to support staff through challenging situations will be invaluable as we continue strengthening our approach to community safety.”

With the recent expansion of the City’s community safety program, to include 20 community safety officers and six by-law enforcement officers who patrol downtown Moncton 24/7, the decision was made to split by-law and community safety into its own department due to increasing workloads and complexities within these areas.

The role will also focus on strengthening the frontline response to community safety concerns; enhancing support, training, and resource planning for the community safety and by‑law teams; and developing proactive strategies to manage the impacts of homelessness and other evolving social challenges.

The new leadership role was created to prioritize public safety and meet the increasing need for coordinated community safety services.
