An East Coast Beginning

Over 100 years of BGC

For more than a century, BGC Canada has been a constant, steady presence in communities across the country—showing up for young people when they need it most. Known today as BGC Canada, the organization has a long and meaningful history rooted in inclusion, opportunity, and the belief that every child and youth deserves a safe place to belong.

A story that began in 1900

BGC Canada’s story began in Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1900, with the creation of the first “Every Day Club,” later known as the East End Boys Club. At a time when many young people faced poverty, unsafe streets, and limited access to education or recreation, this small club offered something powerful: a safe place to go, positive role models, and a sense of community.

What started as a local effort to support disadvantaged boys quickly grew into a national movement.

Growing into a national organization

In 1929, the Boys’ Club Federation of Canada was formed under the leadership of Vernon McAdam, bringing together clubs with a shared mission. By 1947–1948, the organization became known as Boys’ Clubs of Canada and was formally recognized as a national non-profit.

As communities evolved, so did the organization. By the early 1970s, it became clear that girls were just as eager—and just as deserving—of access to safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities. Between 1972 and 1974, the organization officially adopted the name Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, reflecting its growing inclusivity.

Becoming BGC Canada

In 2021, the organization took another important step forward, rebranding as BGC Canada. This change was about more than a name—it was a clear statement of values. BGC Canada now proudly serves all children and youth, regardless of gender identity, background, ability, or circumstance.

The new name reflects a modern, inclusive vision while honoring the organization’s deep roots and long-standing commitment to young people.

More than recreation: a “third place” for youth

While early clubs focused primarily on recreation and reducing delinquency, BGC Canada has grown into a comprehensive community resource. Today, BGC clubs are often described as a “third place”—a welcoming environment outside of home and school where young people feel safe, supported, and valued.

Programs offered through local BGC clubs span a wide range of needs and interests, including:

  • Mentorship and leadership development

  • Academic support and education programs

  • Mental health and wellness initiatives

  • Nutrition and food security programs

  • Sports, arts, and creative expression

At their core, all BGC programs are designed to help young people build confidence, develop life skills, and realize their full potential.

Supporting communities coast to coast

Today, BGC Canada operates more than 700 locations nationwide, serving over 200,000 children and youth every year. From urban centres to rural and remote communities, local clubs (like Riverview, Moncton & Dieppe) respond to the unique needs of the neighborhoods they serve.

The national organization plays a critical role in supporting these local clubs. Through advocacy, research, funding initiatives, and capacity-building support, BGC Canada helps ensure that clubs across the country can deliver high-quality, impactful programs.

Canada’s largest child and youth-serving organization

With over 125 years of experience, BGC Canada is now the largest child and youth-serving organization in Canada. Its longevity speaks to its adaptability, relevance, and unwavering commitment to young people.

From its beginnings as a single safe space in Saint John to a nationwide network of clubs, BGC Canada continues to evolve while staying true to its mission: helping children and youth discover their potential and build brighter futures.

In a changing world, one thing remains constant—BGC Riverview, Moncton & Dieppe are there, every day, creating safe spaces where young people belong.
