$5 wage increase for CUPE 1251 members in N.B.

More than 750 public service workers in New Brunswick are receiving a $5-per-hour wage increase.

The raise is part of a new four-year collective agreement between the province and CUPE Local 1251.

The increase is retroactive to June 16, 2022, and will be phased in over four years.

Employees will see hourly raises of $1 in the first year, followed by $1.10, $1.30 and $1.60 in the remaining years.

CUPE 1251 represents workers in public institutions such as correctional centres or group homes.

That includes correctional officers, custodians, cooks, laundry staff and human services counsellors.

The agreement also introduces new premiums for evening and weekend shifts, an increase to the safety boot allowance, and changes to vacation entitlements to improve access to time off.

Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy said the deal reflects the province’s commitment to supporting frontline workers who help maintain public safety and care.
