UPDATE: 2 arrested after police operation near Fredericton

Two people have been arrested after an RCMP operation in the Fredericton area that prompted an emergency alert.

Mounties issued the alert in the Zealand and Burtts Corner area, northwest of the city, just before 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said they were searching for individuals “reported to be carrying firearms” in the area of Route 104.

“Please shelter in place and avoid the area,” said the RCMP.

In an update around 9:45 a.m., police said the operation had ended and residents could once again leave their homes.

There is no word on what, if any, charges the two individuals will face. Police said officers remain in the area as part of the investigation.
