Fire has extensively damaged an apartment on Mill Road.
It was reported shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday.
Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian McDonald says when they arrived, flames and smoke were coming from a second-floor apartment in the two-storey, twelve-unit building.
“The homeowner was home. He woke up and left on his own, and he did not need medical attention.”
McDonald says all of the other tenants also evacuated safely.
Unfortunately, a cat in the unit where the fire started did not survive.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire quickly and contained it to one apartment, but the roof and trusses were substantially damaged.
Four departments were required, with nineteen firefighters on scene for around three hours.
Several hours later, a second fire on Gordon Street also caused extensive damage.
McDonald says it started on the second floor of a Harvest House residence, which was divided into several rooms.
Residents managed to evacuate safely before the Moncton Fire Department got there.
“This is due to a good working fire alarm system, which is always very helpful,” McDonald adds.
No one was hurt, but ten residents have now been displaced.
There’s no word yet on what caused either fire.
