A new Community Peace Garden will soon transform Mapleton Park in the north end of Moncton into a welcoming outdoor space for all residents.
The project aims to celebrate local culture, promote unity, and enhance community well-being.
With an estimated cost of $100,000 and more than $45,000 already raised through donations and sponsorships, the project brings together local partners and community members in a shared vision.
Project co-chair Sherry Trenholm, representing the Community Peace Garden Development Committee, outlined several key features during a recent city council presentation.
“The garden actually will be equipped with signage. There will be a peace pole and there also will be a turtle public art to represent the Indigenous at the entrance,” she said.
Trenholm also explained how the garden will contribute to the city’s goals.
“It enhances mental and physical well-being, promotes and provides educational opportunity, and improves the environment, so it certainly will enhance Mapleton Park and encourage community engagement and volunteerism,” she added
The garden will cover an area of 82 feet by 35 feet on level, accessible ground.
Its design includes public art, landscaped plantings, and seating areas that build on Mapleton Park’s role as a community hub, a space that Trenholm says already welcomes many visitors for events and social gatherings.
Construction is scheduled to begin mid-August, with an official opening planned for September 21, on International Peace Day.
