International student dies in suspected drowning

An international student has died after a suspected drowning in western New Brunswick.

RCMP were called to the Shogomoc Walking Bridge near Nackawic on Monday evening.

The River Valley Sun reports the young man’s body was recovered around noon on Tuesday.

The teen was from Brazil and attending Nackawic High School, according to the newspaper.

“It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the tragic and untimely passing of an international student from Nackawic High School,” the Nackawic-Millville Rural Community’s mayor, council and staff said in a social media post.

Nackawic High School Principal Sean Newlands also notified students and their families in an email on Tuesday morning.

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I share news of a tragic incident that has impacted our school community,” he wrote.

“Last evening, one of our international students from Brazil, who had been studying at Nackawic High School this semester, was involved in a swimming incident in the area.”

A care centre was open for students on Tuesday afternoon, he said, with continued support being made available over the coming days.
