Mayors say Canada Summer Games a great opportunity for N.B.

Moncton’s Deputy Mayor describes the 2029 Canada Summer Games as a celebration of sport, unity and diversity.

Moncton and Saint John are coming together to host the event.

Paulette Theriault says it will bring thousands of athletes, coaches, volunteers and guests to our province, “We are eager to begin planning this extraordinary event and we can’t wait to welcome all of Canada in 2029.”

Theriault says this event will add to the sporting successes in Moncton, including the World Juniors and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She adds, hosting the Games is an opportunity for our communities to work hand in hand and it’s a great way to contribute to our economies.

The Summer Games is expected to draw up to 30, 000 people to the province, including athletes, coaches and visitors. The economic impact has the potential to be up to $57 million for the province.

Hampton Mayor Robert Doucet is also the vice-chair for the Fundy Regional Service Commission.

He says one of the venues that will greatly benefit from this event is the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, “One of the many, many legacies of the 2029 Canada Games is the significant renewal of the existing Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John. We look forward to that, and working with our federal and provincial partners also to deliver this strategic infrastructure project. It’s a big one.”

The Canada Games Aquatic Centre was originally built for New Brunswick to host the Summer Games in 1985.
