Investments to help battle future N.B. wildfires

An increase in wildfires across Canada has prompted more funding from the federal and New Brunswick governments.

The joint investment of $40.1 million is being provided over four years.

The federal and provincial governments are each providing $12.8 million over four years through the Fighting and Managing Wildfires in a Changing Climate Program (FMWCC) – Equipment Fund. They’ll each also provide $7.25 million over four years through a contribution agreement under the Resilient Communities through FireSmart (RCF) Program.

“With the expected impacts of climate change on our province, we must begin to make large investments now in order to be prepared for future challenges,” said New Brunswick’s Natural Resources Minister John Herron.

This will support the purchase of equipment including tanks and pumps, drones, trucks and heavy equipment. It will also help to establish and train a group of Indigenous firefighters.

This will help New Brunswick to be better prepared to respond and deal with local wildfires and provide support for other provinces that are experiencing high fire activity.
