N.B. seeks input for provincial budget

The Holt government wants your input as it prepares its first provincial budget.

A pre-budget consultation paper was released by the finance department on Friday.

It outlines the province’s economic and financial situation, as well as government priorities and guiding questions for submissions.

Finance Minister René Legacy said the input will help frame discussions as they prepare for long-term sustainability while continuing to balance the needs of New Brunswickers against the province’s fiscal realities.

“We know that New Brunswickers want a government that is open and transparent, which is something we are committed to,” Legacy said in a news release.

“However, that also means having difficult discussions about our fiscal realities and the need to do things differently to improve our outcomes, despite the challenges we face.”

New Brunswickers are asked to consider ways to do things differently to address challenges, as well as revenue growth opportunities or cost-saving measures that would be beneficial.

It also wants to hear from residents on how to address challenges for the long term based on government priorities and which commitments are most important in the short term.

The deadline to submit feedback and suggestions is Feb. 28. All of the details can be found in the pre-budget consultation paper.

The Holt government is slated to deliver its first budget on March 18.
