Coroner’s inquest planned after teen’s death in psychiatric unit

A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled to further examine the death of a teen at the Georges Dumont Hospital.

It will be held from January 27 to 31 at the Moncton courthouse.

Nineteen-year-old Kaytlyn Hemsworth died in the psychiatric facility at the hospital in April 2023.

Deputy Chief Coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will hear from witnesses about the facts surrounding her death.

Recommendations will then be made aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The New Brunswick Coroner Service is an independent fact-finding agency that may not make any finding of legal responsibility.

The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. with jury selection.
