A former Olympian will lead New Brunswick to the Canada Winter Games next year.
Dianne Norman was named chef de mission last week.
Norman is considered one of the greatest female basketball players in New Brunswick. She represented Canada at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Isabelle Thériault said the role of chef de mission is vital as the volunteer leader of the New Brunswick delegation.
“Dianne’s leadership and experience make her an outstanding choice for this role,” Thériault said in a release from the province. “We are confident she will inspire the team and help create unforgettable memories at the 2027 Canada Games.”
Along with her Olympic experience, Norman has represented Canada at the Pan Am Games. She’s also participated in national university championships, the World University Games, the Jeux de la Francophonie and the 1987 and 1989 Canada Games.
She’s a member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame and Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame.
Norman is currently a senior adviser for strategic enrolment management at UNB and has experience in organizational development, change management and conflict resolution. She’s served as a board member with the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada.
Norman said she’s honoured to take on the role.
“This is an incredible opportunity to support our athletes and coaches and to showcase the strength and spirit of our province on a national stage,” she said.
The Fredericton resident is taking over the role from Nicole Smith, who has held the role since 2017.
“Nicole’s dedication and service over the past several years have helped set a strong foundation for success,” said Thériault. “We extend our sincere thanks for her years of service to Team New Brunswick.”
The 2027 Canada Games will be held in Quebec City from Feb. 27 to March 14, 2027.
New Brunswick is expected to send 325 athletes, coaches and support staff.
