New Year’s Day brings first storm of 2026

You’ll have some digging out to do this morning before heading into work.

Snow began falling on Thursday afternoon and continued into the night.

Over 15 centimetres fell for most of southern and southeastern New Brunswick.

The last of the snowfall warnings was lifted at around 4:30 Friday morning, as this storm system moved out of the area.

Schools are still closed as students wrap up their Christmas break. They’ll return to class on Monday.

There are just a few outages in the province. NB Power crews worked quickly to repair any customers impacted last night.

A couple of things to keep in mind with the cleanup, if you are heading out this morning.

Be very aware of the ice left behind from the freezing rain earlier this week. It is hidden away under all of the snow.

Roads and sidewalks are very slippery, and motorists and pedestrians will need to give themselves some extra time.

Environment Canada is forecasting a few colder nights, so be prepared to bundle up until Tuesday.
